Alongside performing and more conventional publication in collections and magazines, Becci creates shorter bespoke collections of poems. She describes these as ‘poetry in pill form for an intellectual and emotional pick-me-up’. These collections are created entirely by the poet, including the cover design and book construction. They are sold at between £4-6 depending on cover design choice. When sold in person and at events, these come with a personalised poem to order.
‘#Ugly’ was written in response to something Becci heard on BBC Radio 4 (she forgets when or which programme), in which the positivity of art was being questioned. Becci distinctly remembers the point being made that art tends to glorify the beautiful, or what is socially accepted as beautiful, and ignore the ugly. Becci disagrees with this. So this is a collection of ten poems that attempt to blur the boundaries between the ugly and the beautiful, issuing a challenge to Keats’ declaration that ‘beauty is truth and truth beauty’.
‘#Ugly’ is a collection of secret angels, grotesque daughters, men sleeping on streets and dead truths. It is not beautiful. That’s the point of it.
Reviews for ‘#Ugly’ will be accessible here soon.
